Frequently asked questions.
Everything you need to know about MTD for Landlords.
What is Making Tax Digital?
Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax requires some landlords and sole traders to keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC. It applies from April 2026 when the qualifying gross income on your 2024/25 Self Assessment return from property and self-employment combined was more than £50,000. The threshold is more than £30,000 from April 2027 and more than £20,000 from April 2028.
How do Open Banking and CSV imports work?
Connect your bank through secure, read-only Open Banking to import booked transactions automatically. Prefer files? Export a compatible CSV statement from your bank and upload it instead. In both cases, MTD for Landlords organises the transactions, suggests categories, and holds uncertain items for your review.
What does the current HMRC integration scope cover?
The declared initial scope is the direct-taxpayer, in-year UK-property journey. Production filing remains disabled until the release gates and HMRC production access are complete. End-of-year and final-return work must be completed through a supported alternative.
Can my accountant use this?
Yes — and they get far more than exports. Accountants have their own dedicated portal where they can set up your account, manage your properties and transactions on your behalf, and send you an onboarding invite when everything is ready. They can see a complete financial overview — income, expenses, net profit — without you needing to share files or chase spreadsheets. You can also invite an existing accountant from your account settings to give them direct access.
I'm an accountant — is there a plan for my practice?
Yes. Accountant plans are billed monthly only: £49/month for up to 5 client accounts, or £90/month for unlimited client accounts. A 14-day free trial is included — no credit card required. You can onboard clients by creating their account, setting up properties and transactions on their behalf, then sending them a branded invite to claim their account when you're ready.
Is my financial data secure?
We use encrypted connections and access controls, bank connections are read-only, and our data-handling practices are designed around UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. Our privacy policy explains the service providers used to operate the product.
How does the free trial work?
Landlords get a 7-day free trial with access to the features included in their trial plan — no credit card required. Accountants get a 14-day free trial. At the end of the trial, landlords can choose Starter (£12/month) or Pro (£24/month), with annual billing available. Accountants can choose £49/month for up to 5 clients or £90/month for unlimited clients; accountant plans are monthly only. If you decide not to subscribe, your account will be paused and your data retained for 30 days.
Can I cancel at any time?
Yes. There are no long-term contracts or cancellation fees. You can cancel your subscription at any time from your account settings, and you will retain access until the end of the current billing period. We never charge penalties for cancelling.
What payment methods do you accept?
Payments are handled by Stripe. MTD for Landlords does not receive or store full card details.
